veteran: Veterans Day 2023 - 11/08/23 09:08 AM

At the 11th hour in the 11th month on the 11th day, we will celebrate Armistice Day also known as Remembrance Day and now known as Veteran's Day. Veteran's Day is a day we celebrate all those who have served, are currently serving, and will serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
In our small New England town of Georgetown, MA our veterans will assemble at 10:40 a.m. at Harry Murch Veteran's Park, located on East Main Street just before the town square.
I am sharing my speech below
Good Morning Ladies & Gentlemen, Veterans, & Honored Guests.

veteran: Veterans - 11/05/23 03:54 PM
This past Saturday, 4 November our local American Legion Post #211 held their annual Veteran's Day Poppy Drive. For those who do not know the significance of the Poppy here's a brief explanation from Post #211. I took this from the flyer we put together as a handout to the folks and kids who stopped by. We invite all to participate in Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, and Veteran's Day on 11 November. The 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour.

veteran: Are You Relieved? - 05/22/20 07:29 AM
YOUR DOG WILL BE!!!
A good idea is always enjoyable BUT when it comes to fruition many get to enjoy the fruits.
Today I'm giving a big shoutout to a friend and fellow Veteran, Don Jarvis, for this idea for repurposing old fire hydrants that have outlived their purpose. Here's a picture of the first repurposed hydrant. It was just installed and painting was finished yesterday.
As old hydrants become available they will be placed along dog walking routes and dog parks. Each hydrant will have doggie treat bins and doggie poop pickup bags. Of course, the dogs are encouraged to relieve themselves on … (14 comments)

Memorial Day 2019

Good Morning Ladies & Gentlemen,

My name is Doug Dawes, Commander of the Georgetown Rene J Gagnon American Legion Post #211. Along with the Wanda Codair Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7608 we welcome you to the observance of Memorial Day 2019.

On Memorial Day we stand in memorial for those veterans, men and women, who have served our nation and have passed from this Earth. Memorial Day is a somber day and is not intended to be a celebration but rather a remembrance and honoring for our deceased veterans

veteran: Today is National Poppy Day - 05/24/19 05:17 AM
Wear a Poppy this weekend.
Today is National Poppy Day. Many don't know the story of the Poppy and how it came about. Here's the story straight from the American Legion.
The Poppy Story
After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the growth to soils in France and Belgium becoming enriched with lime from the rubble left by the war. From the dirt and mud grew a beautiful red poppy. The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields.” The poem was written by Lieutenant Colonel John … (8 comments)

veteran: Remember | Honor | Teach - 12/14/18 10:38 PM
Today is NATIONAL WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA DAY. This day is observed annually on the 3rd Saturday in December, National Wreaths Across America Day is a movement to cover all Veterans grave markers with a Christmas wreath. Remember & Honor.
The ceremonies begin at 12:00 noon EST. Wreaths Across America began with the intent to place a wreath on each grave at Arlington National Cemetery. The movement has expanded way beyond that now with hundreds of communities participating across the country & placing wreaths on their community veteran graves. I'm told there will be 1.8 million wreaths placed today across the nation.
This year in Georgetown, MA there … (16 comments)

veteran: Veterans and the VA Loan... - 11/09/18 02:13 PM
Last year I went to a workshop hosted by the American Warrior Real Estate Professional organization. It was an emotionally moving experience for me. This is an organization dedicated to veterans. After the workshop ended I received the AWREP designation. The first thing I did was contact 2 or 3 veterans in the mortgage business and specializing in loans to veterans. Many veterans do not seek VA loans BUT this infographic shows an increase in those seeking VA loans.

...,As citizens of the United States of America to vote. It took 5 Constitutional Amendments over 100 years to end voter discrimination. Many men, women & families fought and gave their lives to ensure those of us that are citizens have a say in electing OUR representatives in government. President Trump has extended the proclamation for November to be National Veterans Month. Veterans Day is Sunday 11 November.

The Amendments are:
15th Amendment -  Ensured voting rights for all males, including Black Americans,              Ratified 3 February 1870

veteran: Helping Veterans Finance... - 06/18/18 06:40 AM
Last week a lawyer friend of mine contacted me and alerted me to the following press release from the MassHousing organization regarding a closing cost credit for all Veterans, including National Guard, Reserve members, and Gold Star Families.
MassHousing (The Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency) is an independent, quasi-public agency created in 1966 and charged with providing financing for affordable housing in Massachusetts. MassHousing is not a direct originator of mortgages and instead makes home loans through 170 partner banks, mortgage lenders and credit unions across the Commonwealth. MassHousing then purchases the loans and services them from its Boston office.

veteran: "M" is for Memorial - 05/27/18 08:01 PM
Memorial Day is upon us. I hope you all plan on attending your local Memorial Day Ceremonies. Then at 3:00 p.m. please stop what you are doing for 2 minutes for 2 minutes of silence or a prayer for those in harm's way.
Last year I read this poem as part of my Memorial Day speech.
Eleanor Roosevelt's Wartime Prayer
Dear Lord,
Lest I continue
My complacent way,
Help me to remember that somewhere,
Somehow out there
A man died for me today.
As long as there be war,
I then must
Ask and answer
Am I worth dying for?

veteran: Do you Have Your Poppy? - 11/09/17 01:07 PM
Ever since watching the Ken Burns documentary of Vietnam many memories have come flooding back. Just this year I met a veteran, a Marine, who spent 3 tours in Vietnam. He lived homeless under a dumpster when he was found by another veteran who took him in and got him help at the VA. You see this man was suffering from a traumatic brain injury. He no longer had any memory of life before he arrived in Vietnam. Today this veteran is living as normal a life as he can. He has a family and dedicates his life to helping veterans because someone cared … (12 comments)

veteran: Veterans...Flu Season's Coming - 10/04/17 06:06 AM

Veterans, Fight the Flu, It Starts With You!

The other day I was at the local VA Healthcare clinic for a routine visit. I was met with a sign FLU SHOTS HERE. When they took my weight, BP and pulse the nurse asked: "Have you gotten your flu shot?"  "Nope.", "Are you going to?" "Haven't decided yet." "Oh, ok." Then I went in to see the doc. After saying hello, the first thing she said was "Before you leave get your flu shot!" "Grrrr...ok Doc."

I wasn't going to post today BUT a friend of mine sent me this article written by a man that served with his brother in Vietnam. I remembered I could write a post and schedule it to post automatically. Below is just one story from a veteran who served in Vietnam

National Medal of Honor Day on March 25 is dedicated to all Medal of Honor recipients. Today, let's celebrate those special recipients.
Created in 1861, the Medal of Honor is the United States of America’s highest military honor. It is awarded only to US military personnel, by the President of the United States in the name of Congress, for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty. There are three versions of the Medal of Honor; one for the Army, one for the Navy and one for the Air Force, with personnel of the Marine Corps and the Coast … (14 comments)

...was referred to by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as " a date which will live in Infamy". On that day Japan staged a devastating sneak attack on our Pacific Naval Base anchored at Pearl Harbor. If good fortune can be found, that day, thankfully, our Carrier Group was not in port. They were out on practice maneuvers and were not seen by the attackers.

We must never forget this day. Every day is Veteran's Day to a veteran. If you have the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. visit all the war memorials … (8 comments)
