Friday Flags: The Flag Appreciated the Event of the 4th of July
We spent the 4th of July listening to a full concert presented by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra at their summer venue in Simsbury, CT. The announced crowd, within the paid gates was 8,000.
The concert for the July 4th Holiday is always a tribute to America, as they have honor guards representing the services. We were there with a family friend and ironically, with each service that was honored, I could show pride, not only for my service (Army), but also my father and brother (Navy), my wife's son, (Air Force), … (17 comments)

Friday Flags: A Patriotic 4th of July in Prospect CT, 2025
We have a most appropriate Friday Flags, which coincides with the Birthday of our country. YAH!
Our small town is mostly residential with the requisite businesses.
It is the intersection of 2 state roadways, Rts 68, East & West and Rt 69, North and south.
The town intersection sits atop the highest point in town where the town hall is located.
Every utility pole for at least 1/2 mile coming into the intersection bears our flag, and on the day, I took this Friday Flag photo, the town hall flag said no reason to wait … (19 comments)

Friday Flags: A Union of Church and State in Prospect, CT
Our spring, from what I read has been like all else, with temperature extremes, a lot of rain and intermittent winds, and even a combination of all with a 48-hour span. It was no different early in the weekend.
As I was driving up one of the man roads in town, the lawn and flags on utility poles were appreciating the airing out by the winds.
A look down a long drive of a large church in town offered a view that just made it mandatory for me to turn around.
A I had seen … (12 comments)

friday flags: Friday Flags, Blowing in the Wind In Simsbury, CT - 06/19/25 06:20 PM
Friday Flags, Blowing in the Wind In Simsbury, CT
Our senior golf league had an away day this week and 28 ventured to Simsbury CT to play the public course there.
The layout is special as over 300 acres of what was once an orchard were donated to the town with the condition that it be used only for recreation.
So, in addition to a championship golf course, there is a hockey rink, a large pool, tennis courts, basketball courts and a large playscape.
The clubhouse is friendly and of course there is a large flag at the main entrance.
It was a great morning, the … (14 comments)

Friday Flags: A Brisk Breeze for the Senior League in Watertown CT
The Golf course at Crestbrook Park is a very challenging test of abilities and one that I called my home course for almost 40 years.  As I prefer to walk when I play, I can't manage to do 18 and have changed locations.
However, many of the people that I do know from the days there are also among those participating in the Senior League, which plays every Wednesday AM.
A shotgun start with 88 players promptly at 8:30 AM
There are 2 divisions, A Div for players with a 9-hole handicap of … (13 comments)

Friday Flags: A Good Night in Colchester, CT
We attended an awards night for the students at Bacon Academy, the high school that serves the 9-12 grades in Colchester, CT.
Our grandson, Raphael was to receive some recognition, and when the evening was over, he was the recipient of 5 certificates of achievement.
On the way-out f the school, I glanced at the flags near the entrance, and it was if they were calling out to me.
Both the US flag, and the state of CT flag were in full wave.
He had an exceptional year and passed his AP classes with high grades. He is … (13 comments)

Friday Flags: In Galloway, NJ Every Day is Memorial Day
Late in March of this year, we spent a weekend away at a resort in Galloway, NJ, which is across the water from Atlantic City, NJ.
On a morning when we went out for breakfast, the wind was blowing hard, and as I always look for the right flag for this weekly post, I caught a few.

The one that was most impressive, I saved for this weekend post as it is most fitting for Memorial Day.
This community had established a special area to honor the fallen members of their community some going back … (21 comments)

Friday Flags: A Wind Blowing to the West in Waterbury
Our spring here in Connecticut has been completely out of the norm. We have gotten warm weather, then it drops back to low temps.
We get a lot of rain and then we get another dose of snow.
Weather patterns typically are from the west to the east as generated by the rotation of the earth, as the wind blows.
So, it was a bit unusual for me to see the flag at the golf course blowing to California, but that was the case.
There was also no waiting for the wind to pick up as … (19 comments)

Friday Flags: A Home Depot Flag That Wanted to be Noticed
As a homeowner, it is next to impossible to not go to a hardware store almost monthly. It may not be urgent but the convenience is without equal.
An early spring day found me going to get the fertilizers I would need for the lawn and plants. Too early for the garden and flowers for the window boxes.
The wind was blowing pretty strong as I entered, and I paused just a bit to get this shot.  I made my purchases and went to the car to unload and move on.  n the … (15 comments)

Friday Flags If You Wait, it will Wave in Watertown CT
While driving into Watertown, CT to meet someone at a condo complex, I noticed the flag at the entrance was less than furled. The limbs on the adjacent trees were moving slightly so I waited a few minutes to see if the flag would strut for me.
The saying is that a watched pot never boils, and I was starting to believe that that would apply here as well.
As I was thinking that I would have to return, the trees moved a lot, and then I looked up and that flag was … (17 comments)

Friday Flags: Big and Beautiful in Watertown CT
I was heading into Watertown, CT on Wednesday morning. On a main road is a plant with a very large flag out front. It very seldom is fully furled, however this week, there was enough wind that I just had to stop.
Most flag sizes are sized for the height of the pole. The pole that was supporting this banner had to be at last 40 ft tall, which would be appropriate for a flag,  8' x 12'
It didn't matter as it ws just a beautiful sight to see.

Friday Flags: Half Mast Out of Respect for a Pope
I paused a few seconds to give a thought as to why the flags were at half-mast and then realized in a state with such a strong Catholic population the respect for the head of the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis, the first Cardinal elected to head the church born in the Americas.
Born in Argentina,  to Italian immigrants,  Jorge Mario Bergoglio was a very sympathetic and an advocate for the poor.
He will lie in state through the weekend and his funeral will be next week. Once the funeral is over the college of Cardinals … (17 comments)

Friday Flags:  A Stiff Breeze Makes Them Wave Proudly
Whie spending a couple of days in Galloway, NJ, we happened to find a flag that was crying for attention.
After stopping for breakfast, I took a couple of minutes to show appreciation to the Bayview Volunteers fire Co, which is within the Galloway Township.
The flag itself was appreciating the airing out the wind offered.
I did as well and share it as well.

Friday Flags:  A NJ Rest Stop with Entertainment
We took a few days to relax which has us driving along the Graden State Parkway in New Jersey.
As is the case, a stop to stretch the legs and refresh the body as well is always in order.
On the way in, I paused as the flags were flying and this stop had the POW black flag, as well as the NJ flag.
It was also a warm spot for the heart to see the name that had been assigned to the stop.
Mile post 124 of the Parkway was dedicated to the singer, a New Jersey … (11 comments)

Friday Flags:  A Double Flag of Support in Prospect CT
As I made reference to the spring winds in last week's Friday Flags post, it was a good time to take photos.
Located just off the town center, is the town pond and recreation area that also has a proud flagpole, and like its neighbor is somewhat sheltered.
McGrath pond is a manmade water pond, and it is also the pond that gets stocked with fish for the derby in the spring and one can see people fishing there all year trying to catch a few that managed to survive the onslaught of anglers.

Friday Flags: IT Support in Prospect CT
It's a time of year where spring is attempting to take hold. Part of that transition is the strong winds that blow nd in areas where the flag poles are a bit more sheltered, the wind wins, and so do I.
Thus, I was able to catch a shot of a flag proudly appreciate the airing out the wind offered in the front of a local IT company in Prospect, CT.
The company, Millennium Technology Solutions,  is an 24/7 IT support company that that has been in business for 30 years.

Friday Flags: The Flags are in All Over the Course, Mar 2025
For the golfers in the Greater Waterbury CT area the small flags are flying to kick off the golf season.
It is still a bit nipsy and for this Friday snow is in the forecast, but as I drove by the course earlier in the week the wind gave me a reason to stop.
With the season started there is now someone that can attend to the flag on a daily basis, and it was waving proudly.
A small walk down the 18 fairway allowed me to get a shot of both flags.
While … (12 comments)

Friday Flags  A Matter of Wishing a Safe Drive Home
As we were making our drive home, we stopped as we needed food, and the car was thirsty also.
As we were leaving the fuel stop, I looked cross the road and there was a flag pointing the way to get back onto I-95, and it shown as have a safe drive as well.
It was a happy omen as well as a good omen as the drive was uneventful, and we were happy to get back to a chilly yet comfortable home base.

Friday Flags  A Hilton Head Island Flag along the Roadway
We're in the home stretch of our sabbatical and prior to crossing the Intercoastal Bridge to get onto Hilton Head Island we passed the entrance to the Hilton Head National Golf course.
The entrance is blocked and I learned that the course is closed and being developed as homesites.
The entrance still has the poles, and atop the poles were the South Carolina flag and that of our country as well.
After a morning of rain and spending some time at the outlets, it gave me a smile and the security of a tee time … (15 comments)

Friday Flags: It Isn't Always the Sunshine State
We are in our last stages of the February escape and enjoying some of the warmth the state of Florida offers.  The weather has been a bit different, and we had some heavy rains as we as windy days.
One of the landmarks I travel past often is the Grande Lakes complex. which boasts a Ritz Carlton Hotel, A JW Marriott hotel and also the Championship golf course that surrounds the hotel.
As this complex is so large and occupies a corner location it is quite visible for some time.
The golf course is quite challenging and … (17 comments)
