groundhog day: Groundhog's Day 2024 in Prospect CT - 02/02/24 07:26 AM
Groundhog's Day 2024 in Prospect CT
It's Groundhog Day, and as the tradition offers, if the burrowing rodent doesn't see its shadow when it peeks from its burrow, then it's a sign that we are in for an early spring.
It's not likely that the little guy saw his shadow today for 2 reasons.
The power went out in town early morning and was off for 3 hours so his alarm may not have worked.
It's overcast and raining which is a better reason.
Regardless, I welcome an early chase to the cold weather and will be appreciative of warm days when we return from the … (8 comments)

groundhog day: Groundhog Day 2023 Descension in the Ranks - 02/02/23 01:16 PM
Groundhog Day 2023 Descension in the Ranks
In the Groundhog Day tradition, the groundhog wakes up early on the annual Feb. 2 holiday and looks around for its shadow. If it sees its shadow, winter will persist for another six weeks. If the groundhog doesn’t see its shadow, then spring will come early.
In Gobbler's Nob PA, Punxsutawney Phil, probably annoyed at being rousted from bed so early, and after almost biting one of the assembled dignitaries, predicted another 6 weeks of winter.
Chuckles XI made his annual appearance at the Lutz Children’s Museum in Manchester. Manchester Mayor Jay Moran translated Chuckles XI prediction … (18 comments)

groundhog day: Dissention In the Family Ground-Hog Day Predictions 2017 - 02/02/17 05:51 AM
Dissention In the Family Ground-Hog Day Predictions 2017
Feb 2 is traditionally called Groundhog Day, which is when that that chubby rodent is awakened too early so that he can come out of its burrow to predict the possibility of winter's end.
Regardless of what the weather forecasters might think with all of their scientific gadgets and data, we still look to Nature for the possibility of an early spring.
This year, the family of groundhogs are inconsistent in their predictions. In Gobbler's Nob PA, Punxsutawney Phil, probably annoyed at being rousted from bed so early, and after almost biting one of the assembled … (21 comments)

groundhog day: Phil and Chuckles Want an Early Spring - 02/01/16 09:43 PM
Groundhog Day 2016, but unlike the movie with Bill Murray, we will not be stuck in a loop of winter like we were last year.
At dawn of this day,  Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow and was not frightened by his shadow. As thought on cue, Colchester Chuckles in CT also thought that we should relax and wait for an early spring.
For many here in CT it's as if we have been in a tepid fall since November as we have enjoyed some mild temperatures.  Even the Nor'easter that came through here 10 days ago has been forgotten as the snow is almost completely … (15 comments)

groundhog day: It's A Conspiracy Phil Saw His Shadow - 02/01/15 10:59 PM

From out of Punxatawney PA, word from his translators was that Phil, that burrowing rodent, came out and saw his shadow.  That means 6 more weeks of winter.

Could it have been caused by the extra people with all those lights waiting for him to come out. How could he not have seen his shadow.  Present in that crowd were several managers of local hardware store, all with stocks of ice-melt, shovels and snow blowers that they were expecting to keep into inventory for a long time.

Here in CT, Chuckles was rumored to also see … (35 comments)

groundhog day: It's Groundhog Day, 2013 and We May or May not Have a Longer Winter - 02/01/13 09:41 PM
It's Groundhog Day, 2013 and We May or May not Have a Longer Winter In our current society, we look to Meteorologists for some accuracy in forecasting the weather. With their years of training and their education, they get it right about 50 percent of the time.

In a time when the equipment was not available, and peeking outside a window was the way to determine the weather, people would look to a ground burrowing animal for a hint. The Groundhog was the prognosticator of how much more winter we were going to have.
Not as the early Indians would … (12 comments)

groundhog day: January 2011, and the Song lyrics, were Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow! - 01/27/11 05:26 AM
January 2011, and the Song lyrics, were Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!

We've had record snowfalls. Officially we've had over 60" of snow so far in January, which is usually about our total for the winter. Groundhog Day is Wed, Feb 2, and there won't be a problem with the ground hog seeing his shadow, as right about now there's little chance of him even getting out of the hole.

Right about now that warm beach anywhere along the Caribbeanwould be welcome. Not to mention what it's doing to the business that … (12 comments)

groundhog day: Feb 2, 2010, Groundhog Day . . . It's not over yet - 02/02/10 12:26 AM

Today is Groundhog Day, the annual right of early spring when a known member of the rodent family, known as either Punxsutawney Phil, or Staten Island Chuck, or Sir Walter Wally, or General Beauregard Lee or Wiarton Willie and a host of others.
Punxsutawney Phil and his cousins has emerged to see his shadow before chilly revelers, meaning winter will last another six weeks.
German tradition holds that if a hibernating animal sees its shadow on Feb. 2 - the Christian holiday of Candlemas - winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says spring will come early.
