For 2025 It's Starting to Look Like Spring in Connecticut
They just can't help themselves as they have been waiting long enough for enough opportunity to just break out.
As I looked out onto the front yard, I saw color and it wasn't just brown.
Daffodils in white and yellow and some purple and white from hyacinths.
The red maple tree has reddish tint and even the grass will start to show its true colors soon.
They just can't help themselves, as they have waited long enough to show up.
I can hardly wait even if it means cutting the grass.

mother nature in prospect ct: It's The First Day of Spring 2025 with Reservations - 03/20/25 11:01 AM
It's The First Day of Spring 2025
According to the calendar, it is the spring equinox, which means that the day and night would be of the same length.
It is also considered by most to be the first day of spring.
Of course, as we are still in March, especially in the Northeast noting can be taken for granted and for the overnight, we are projected to get another blast of winter.
At the very least, the thought makes many feel better, and that part of the smile on the oil man will begin to fade, as will the plow man, but he has … (14 comments)

The Northern Lights Show Further South than Normal
I have had an item on the bucket list that was going to have me traveling to cooler areas of the Northern hemisphere at a time of year when I want warm climes.
This was so that I could gaze and be amazed by the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights.
So pleased was I that they came to me and all I had to do was go outside and gaze upward.
The phenomena known as the Northern Lights, or Southern, as it can also occur over the South pole as well, is caused by interaction with the … (15 comments)

Prospect CT Summer Colors  Special Hydrangeas
It has been an exceptional yer for blooms all over the state, especially hydrangeas. The mix of heat, water and some care has made almost anybody that has a hydrangea look like the absolute greatest gardener.
I posted of our blue hydrangeas, earlier and they are a wall of colors, so much so that the stalks cannot support the weight of the blossoms.
We have a smaller bush that was given to my wife some years ack as a Mother's Day gift and aside from the first year, never grew a bloom. A portion of that was the … (15 comments)

Working a Little Harder for that Meal
We just had the garden areas cleaned up and fresh mulch added. It all came out very nice.
One of the negatives, however, was the area below the bird feeder, where the ground critters would scratch for the leftovers. I noticed the mulch had been disturbed but didn't see the reason until early Friday afternoon.
It was as though the chipmunk was trying to burrow a new home, but then it moved.  Another was doing the same.
It may take a few days for enough to be dropped from the feeder so that they can stop the digging.

Summer Colors in the Yard in Prospect CT
Our spring blooms were plentiful, and the summer astilbes and day lilies don't last very long. It is always pleasant to look into the yard and see the wall of blue hydrangeas that last so long.

We had some rain during the night and the water dropped the blossoms, but with some sun they will spruce right back to smile.

Blooms A Poppin' in Prospect CT 7
We are into the last Sunday of May and as Memorial Day is on the horizon, so is the end of my Spring flower blog.
Not that the flowers are over in our yard, but all should have their colors by now.
The rhododendrons are starting to bloom and, in our yard, there are 10 plants with blooms starting to show their colors.
As one enters our driveway, the irises are in bloom and the day lilies are not very far behind.
We will enjoy our yard and all the perennials that are getting planted to light up the … (12 comments)

Blooms A Poppin' in Prospect CT 6
The phrase regarding months of rain followed by colors of flowers is a bit messed up in the Northeast as we had a lot of rain in March, and some warm weather with colors in April and we are in May which should be a cornucopia of colors and we have been wet and cool.
But, we still have colors.
We have a 140 ft driveway, and it is a massive bed of flowers. Iris, daylilies and lily of the valleys. The iris are starting to show their colors but they don't stay around long.
At the center … (12 comments)

Blooms A Poppin' in Prospect CT 5
We have had some warm weather this past week here in Prospect CT, and more of the colors are showing up to be appreciated.
The phlox is fully blooming and starting to spread.  I will need to trim it back a bit.
Right behind the rock garden and to hide a rock that was too hard to remove is a pink weigela shrub, which seems to get larger blossoms each year.

Up closer to the house are the azaleas which are all strutting their colors to be appreciated.
Along the driveway the day lilies are not yet to be … (13 comments)

Blooms A Poppin' in Prospect CT  4
We are almost completely there with the spring blooms in Prospect.  The daffodils have just about run their course although there are some hanging on.
The phlox at the bottom of the yard that we call the rock garden is in bloom with a carpet of pink. The stragglers of daffodils add some tall color and one can see the choke cherry just behind them all starting it's pink covering of flowers.
Closer to the house, the white azalea bushes are showing their colors, and the daffodils are just about done here.
The pink azaleas are asking for … (15 comments)

Blooms A Poppin' in Prospect CT,  3
Early Sunday afternoon of last week, I was driving into Prospect and as I passed the Medical office building, I was taken enough with the view to turn around and appreciate the almost barren lot.
In another few weeks, it will not be as impressive a view even though the trees will be all fully loaded with leaves.
The landscaping is very well groomed. On this day the parking lot of adorned with blossoms on the trees as well as azaleas in blossom.
When loaded with cars and leaves on the trees it may not even get a … (15 comments)

Blooms A Poppin in Prospect CT, 2
Our weather was slightly stalled this week as we had cooler temps and a bit of rain.
The spring colors may have been slowed, but they still showed additional presence.
The pink weeping willow is showing its colors well and is beautiful when they flow with the wind.
The rock garden at the bottom of the driveway is coming to life and the daffodils have blossomed and greet all that drive by.
The phlox in front of it is starting to show signs of spring and that white/pink carpet should be in full blossom shorty.
It's still too early for … (14 comments)

Blooms A Poppin in Prospect CT
Spring is starting to show signs of its presence here in Prospect, CT and a welcome sight it is.
I was walking up the driveway and took a look at the front yard and the blossoms that are displayed.  It made me smile for its depth of color and it was mainly the daffodils.
Even the hyacinths that were barely showing a week ago, were standing high.
Closer to the driveway, where I had a tree removed, the daffodils are filling in nicely.
In the back yard, the hedge of forsythias are almost at full bloom, and with it will … (11 comments)

mother nature in prospect ct: Spring 2024 March Rains Led to April Flowers - 04/07/24 10:11 AM
Spring 2024  March Rains Led to April Flowers
Th expression has always been April showers lead to May Flowers.  In years past that may have been the case, but I noticed while taking a light stroll along the yard this morning, that the flowers aren't waiting for much warmer weather.
In fact, they aren't even concerned that the spring debris cleanup has yet to be done.
We have daffodils all over the yard and as they are so good about regenerating themselves, they are not only stronger but also thicker.
I know there are several varieties of daffodils, but the best I can do is … (15 comments)

Everybody Needs a Place to Call Home 4
We have been gone for a week, nd when we came back, I went out to check on the birds nesting in the yard.
I looked at the nest in the tree, first, and didn't see a thing, not even the nest.  I looked on the ground, and there was the nest turned over.  I feared that maybe the wind had knocked it over and the hatchlings were grabbed by a larger predator.
When I turned the nest over, it was completely empty and no signs of carnage.
I chose to presume the best and they flew … (15 comments)

Everybody Needs a Place to Call Home 3
This past week I have been very careful about the nest on our front door wreath as I did not want to alarm mom. As I was walking past, if mom flew away, I would take a peek to see how the chicks were doing. Early in the week, as I peeked into the nest the chicks did not move at all. This had me concerned as I feared that maybe they had been neglected and were not alive.
I left the nest alone and walked away.
I was very pleased however when I went back … (19 comments)

Everybody Needs a Place to Call Home 2
Our front door wreath has become a nursery, and I have feared that momma bird would abandon the nest. As I walked up to the door today, I ducked as a bird flew right past me.
That was a good sign and also as I got closer, there were 4 little fur balls all anxious.
All of the droppings on the rim of the next attest to momma spending a lot of time with her brood.
I don't hear them crying for her but hopefully we will get to see them taking first flight.

mother nature in prospect ct: Everybody Needs a Place to Call Home - 06/10/23 03:40 PM
Everybody Needs a Place to Call Home
Earlier in the month I wrote about the bird activity in our front stoop.  A nest had been built in the decorative wreath we have on our front door.
When I looked at the nest there were 4 eggs and I feared that the mother would have abandoned the nest.
I took a peek today after seeing a bird fly away from our front door and was surprised to see chirping beaks looking for food in the nest.
I went in to get the camera to take a photo and all I got was fur, but they are … (16 comments)

Our April Showers Start the Parade of Colors
The adage has always been April Showers bring on May Flowers. While it may have been true once, with the environmental changes across the globe, the consistency is seldom there.
I look at the onset of rain in April as the tears of joy flowing for the end of the drab and cold and the onset of the colors that bring smiles and a far better sense of euphoria.  For the showers that fall in April, start the parade of colors that carry us through the summer.
In our yard, it starts with crocuses, and from … (23 comments)

Love Is In The Air in Prospect CT  Wordless Wednesday
While sitting and working at my window spot, I noticed movement on the front lawn. I tried to focus on what it was and was pleasantly shocked to see some new wildlife make a visit.
I caught this tom just before it dropped down to the neighbor's yard, and sat ad waited as I saw a couple others down there as well. There were 2 males and when they thought she was looking, they would spread their wings and tail feathers and make their calls to try and entice the one hen.
They danced … (20 comments)
