big island attractions: The Floral Adventures of Akaka Falls on Big Island - 09/05/18 09:45 AM
After our exhilerating ziplining adventure on Labor Day, we decided to visit Akaka Falls. I suppose it's possible that trip could have been the plan all along but I only first heard of it after the 8 ziplines. Vika said she and Josh missed the falls during their last trip here because it was closed. I rarely turn down an opportunity to visit a state park, even those I've seen before because you always see something new.
Akaka Falls is one of those must-see tourist attractions on Big Island. It features an optional loop trip to see two big waterfalls and a … (3 comments)

big island attractions: Do Not Wait Forever to Try Ziplining - 09/04/18 10:25 AM
There seemed to always be some sort of reason why I could not go ziplining in the past. Although, whenever I go on vacation, the ziplining places seem to be everywhere. Part of the reason I'd never gone ziplining before was finding a person to do it with. Like, my husband would not want to go ziplining unless I forced him.
On top of that, usually you have to make an appointment. I prefer more spur-of-the-moment activities while on vacation and trying to schedule how I might feel on any given day is difficult.
But Josh and Vika booked this ziplining … (11 comments)

big island attractions: Always a Good Time to Go Snorkeling in Hawaii - 09/03/18 09:51 AM
For the first time in a long time, I left the house yesterday without my cellphone, keys or bag. Our houseguests, Josh and Vika, suggested a snorkeling trip south of Kona. Since they were driving, I figured I didn't need anything. To leave the house without important items to keep an eye on is a bit strange for me. Exhilerating, though.
During our snorkeling adventure, I once again happened upon a remarkable event. A giant manta ray! With a back that looked like if I petted it, the skin would feel like velvet. I swam with that ray for a long distance, … (6 comments)

big island attractions: Jumping Off a 50-Foot Cliff at South Point Hawaii - 09/01/18 10:29 AM
If you ask Gary Thomas in Key West, he will tell you he has the southernmost point in Florida but that is not true. It is the southernmost point in the continental U.S. but not in the United States. Nope, that honor belongs to the Big Island in Hawaii. Our houseguests, the exclusive buyer's agent Josh Amolsch from the Elizabeth Weintraub Team in Sacramento and his beautiful fiancée Vika drove us to South Point Hawaii yesterday.
The point of that 3-hour roundtrip was to watch Vika jump off a nearly 50-foot high cliff into the ocean. She was determined and motivated to … (0 comments)

big island attractions: Rainbow Falls to Mauna Kea to Waipio Valley on the Big Island - 12/24/10 06:12 AM

When I was born, Hawaii was not yet a state. I was in first grade when Alaska became a state, followed 7 months later by Hawaii. It was the coolest thing ever, two new stars added to our flag! I thought that every year we would add new states, as I was way too young to understand how long it had been since any state was added to the Union. Before Alaska, Arizona was the last state, and Arizona joined the union on Valentine's Day in 1912. That means in the last 100 years, give or take, we've added only … (15 comments)

big island attractions: Big Island Bed and Breakfast North of Hilo and Botanical Gardens - 12/23/10 06:14 AM

This is the view from my balcony. I told my husband I could stare at this view for the rest of my life, and he looked at me like I was nuts. What can I say? He is just not an island guy. Although, he did mention that there is a reporter job position open at a small paper on Kauai that probably pays all of $28,000 a year, so there is still hope.

No city anywhere in the world is compete without being home to a farmer's market. This is the farmer's market in Hilo. Good thing there … (12 comments)
