home improvement projects: Do We Need Support Brackets for Quartz Counter Overhangs? - 12/11/18 08:24 PM
One of the things about remodeling a house is realizing contractors are limited by their experiences. They don't know everything. Especially general contractors. Every single one of them has a different opinion. Usually, the goal seems to be to pay their workers as little as possible and get the job done as quickly as they can. GCs are unlike real estate agents because Realtors care if their clients come back to them. I suspect witih some contractors, it's a one job thing.
We are installing quartz counters in our house in Hawaii. You will not believe the number of counter top installers … (11 comments)

home improvement projects: First Phase of Bath Remodels Features Quartz Counters - 10/21/18 10:02 AM
After buying the cabinets, ordering the quartz countertops was the next order of business. That was last June. But, because this bath remodel is happening at our second home in Hawaii, everything takes longer. There are the normal problems caused by rainstorms, hurricanes and volcano eruptions, that sort of stuff.
And, then there is also the problem that people nowadays are just not vested in their jobs. They are not "paid" to think, I guess, I hear that a lot. Some of these guys simply cannot fathom that if they do X then Y might happen. However, I take part of the … (11 comments)

home improvement projects: My Contribution to the Hawaii Bath Remodel - 08/21/18 10:44 AM
Oh, my aching back. It is time for home improvement consequences. Usually, I don't suddenly engage in an uptick of physical activity. But hauling boards, lifting heavy boxes, loading up my SUV, unloading, bending over, all those things can wreak havoc on your body when one is not used to that level of movement.
Of course, that doesn't count stepping in the paint when you're painting baseboards or running into the house carting the wood from garage to lanai. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: Painting Baseboards Day Two Hawaii Bath Remodel.

home improvement projects: The Reason for My Visit to Minneapolis - 06/02/16 10:56 PM
My sister never learned how to install a faucet. I asked if she knew how to change a tire, and she said yes, I remember your advice to stand outside my vehicle and wave. I know how to do many home improvement projects, in part because I enjoy them and in part because I never have to depend on somebody else to make a complete mess of things.
I dragged my sister in Minneapolis over to Home Depot yesterday afternoon, after we finished visiting my brother. You can read more in my personal blog today and see the photos at this link: … (18 comments)

home improvement projects: June is the Month to Paint in Sacramento - 06/01/16 04:23 AM
Everything was moving along rather smoothly yesterday when I wandered out into the yard to see my sidewalk guy distributing piles of decomposed granite where a flagstone / cement combo sidewalk was to be installed. I asked whether he knew he was supposed to pour concrete. Miscommunication error, but I've only learned enough Spanish to find the train station or order food. Darn, darn, darn.
Finally got him back on track. He left, saying he would come back in about an hour, and then his sister-in-law called to say he was in the hospital. Somebody had hit his truck on the freeway. … (4 comments)

home improvement projects: Why You Don't Put a Flashlight Into Your Mouth - 01/21/16 12:54 AM
Why are there still lessons that I have to learn the hard way because my mother never warned me about them? I know it's somebody's fault, and it's much easier to blame my dead mother than to look in the mirror. Besides, I do not want to see my image in the mirror this morning, no way, Jose.
There are very good reasons not to put a flashlight into your mouth. But nobody ever told me, and it's not the sort of thing you would learn in school. You can read more about this and what happened in my personal blog today … (15 comments)

home improvement projects: Forget About Selling Homes in Land Park - 05/09/12 12:08 AM
People think real estate is the business to be in if you don't want to be accountable to anybody. They all want to be their own boss, and probably a lazy boss at that, when you get right down to it. But that's not the best business for lazy people. Especially if you are a Land Park agent. Days of being lazy are few and rare. Nope, the business to be in is home repair.
Yup, home repair. This includes home improvement as well. Doesn't matter which you choose if it involves some dude or dudette coming out to your house … (6 comments)

home improvement projects: Bad Odors and Old Carpeting Do Not Sell a Home, Not Even a Short Sale - 02/23/12 11:45 PM
Some people think you don't have to do anything to sell a short sale, much less to sell a fixer upper. I believe that every home deserves a chance to shine and show off its best characteristics. It doesn't matter if it's a short sale or a regular home in which the seller has equity. Because a buyer doesn't really care. A buyer is not buying the previous mortgage. The buyer is purchasing a home. The condition of that home's existing financing is not really important.
As a Sacramento short sale agent, I try to make suggestions to my sellers of … (6 comments)

home improvement projects: If You're Gonna Remodel a Home, Don't Destroy the Character - 04/18/10 02:34 AM
The thing about being a Land Park agent is I never know how my days will go. Heck, that's true for any real estate agent. We might think we have organized our day but anything can happen. I believe it was John Lennon who said, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." It's almost impossible to accurately predict what will happen in real estate.
Take today, for example. This afternoon, I am taking out a lawyer to look at homes in Land Park. We'll also tour a couple of homes in Midtown and East Sacramento, but … (7 comments)

home improvement projects: The Day Before Floor Refinishing Leads to Conclusion That We Have Too Much Stuff - 12/28/09 01:04 AM

When I show buyers homes in Land Park, they are often amazed at the size of our vintage, classic homes in Land Park. The square footage of an average home in Land Park is generally much smaller than the newer construction home buyers see in places such as Natomas or Elk Grove.
My own home in Land Park is about 2,000 square feet. My husband and I downsized when we moved from a 3-story Victorian in Minneapolis into our home 7 years ago. At the time, I donated a lot of stuff to charity before we moved. After we moved … (14 comments)
