realtor vacation: Raw Abalone is a Treat on the Big Island of Hawaii - 09/04/15 06:10 AM

Oh, my goodness, I almost forgot to stop by Active Rain this morning and say hello. For a Friday before Labor Day weekend, it's been pretty busy, especially since I am already on vacation in Hawaii on the Big Island. But you know that's what happens. It's odd. The minute an agent steps foot on an aircraft -- hey, since when have the names of planes, airliners or airplanes changed to AIRCRAFT, like it's some sort of artsy construction when it's just a hunk of poorly assembled metal with a crummy blackbox that often fails; I mean, can you see Peter, … (8 comments)

realtor vacation: Your Sacramento Realtor Will Be Working From Hawaii - 09/01/15 11:01 AM
There are times when I spot a chance to grab a good deal, I just do it, and don't think twice. I don't feel guilty over spur-of-the-moment decisions. They always tend to work out well because I'm lucky I guess. Or, maybe my mind races so fast that I can cover all of my bases with crystal clear clarity in record time. That's always possible.
My last-minute decision now is to fly to Hawaii for a little while and work from there selling Sacramento real estate. It beats any other scenario I can come up with at the moment. You can read … (10 comments)

realtor vacation: The End of a Minneapolis Vacation from Sacramento - 07/13/15 02:28 AM
When you don't live in the same state as most of your family, it can be hard to say goodbye when it's time to leave them. Of course, if I still wanted to be living in Minneapolis, that's where we would be. I need to go there more often in the frigid winters to remind myself why I prefer Sacramento over Minneapolis.
In the summertime, though, Minneapolis can't be beat. It's not a brutal dry heat like Sacramento, just a little moisture, a bit of humidity. There is so much to do in Minneapolis that you really don't need to go "Up … (8 comments)

realtor vacation: Time to Visit my Sister in Minneapolis - 07/11/15 02:19 AM
Over the past few years, I have noticed Sacramento real estate slowing down quite a bit throughout July. Sales don't really start to move much until we get closer to Labor Day, although sellers and buyers still conduct business, just not as much. Which means that it is a good time of year to plan a few vacation trips, even though it means I am still taking my work with me. I don't ever let go of that.
I realize people do take vacations by leaving work behind, but that's just not me. I don't mind the multi-tasking that is required; it … (9 comments)

realtor vacation: Hot Temps in Hood River, Oregon, and the Columbia River Gorge - 07/06/15 01:41 AM
When I lived in Minneapolis, what many refer to as the Twin Cities nowadays, we always knew there was another town on the other side of the Mississippi River, which divided the two cities, but when you're from Minneapolis, you don't really think much about it. Unless you're from Saint Paul, and then you agonize over what people in Minneapolis think of you. Ha, ha. Little joke there meant to inflame those from St. Paul.
Actually, I think the joke goes: if you say you're a painter, you are an artist if you live in Minneapolis. A house painter if you live … (3 comments)

realtor vacation: Things to Do Along the Columbia River Gorge - 07/05/15 02:10 AM
I hate to see dogs tied up. I realize sometimes you can't help it, though, especially if your dog is with you when you decide to stop at a restaurant to eat. It's certainly better to tie up your dog and leave a bowl of water for your pet than to lock the poor thing in a car like some morons manage.
Strolling along the Columbia River yesterday, we captured a few Ingress portals and then stopped at Clark and Lewie's for lunch. There, on the ramp were two beautiful dogs that seemed oh-so-happy to see us. It wasn't hard once we … (8 comments)

realtor vacation: Many Californians Buy Second Homes in Coos Bay, Oregon - 07/04/15 02:38 AM
My husband and I sometimes talk about where would be the best place to live at retirement. Neither of us are from Sacramento, and I prefer the ocean over just about any place inland. Homes along the coast in California are extremely expensive, even a small home, and although prices are better in Hawaii, I don't think I will be able to persuade my husband to live year-round in Hawaii. We might need a summer place in the states somewhere. We've been talking about buying a second home now, way before retirement, if we can just come to a compromise on … (7 comments)

realtor vacation: Cellphone Coverage in Yachats, Oregon and Hiking the 804 Trail - 07/03/15 02:01 AM
It was another wonderful day of trying to regain cellphone coverage in Yachats, Oregon, when all of a sudden my phone went on the blink. No cell service whatsoever. Give me a heart attack. This was just before I received a text message from my carrier that said I had run out of all of my roaming data. I called them, and they offered to immediately increase my data at no charge. I don't really understand why except they kept making a big deal out of the fact that I have been a loyal customer for 12 years. I guess that's … (11 comments)

realtor vacation: It Is Now Legal to Get High in Oregon - 07/02/15 05:31 AM
July 1 was by all practical means just another fog-filled day, soon to burn off my lunch time in Oregon, but for many of its residents, it was a day they had been waiting for for a long time. The day of legal possession of marijuana in Oregon. And to think that my husband and I were present to help celebrate this glorious occasion, not that we had any pot on us or even around us because we did not, but we can always say now that we were in Oregon when it happened.
Of course, what also happened is I ran … (12 comments)

realtor vacation: Is a Mounted Elk Head on the Wall a Fixture? - 06/30/15 12:24 AM
I thought when I sat down to write my blog today that I would talk about our trip to Florence, Oregon, and share all the photographs of that adventure, including the darlingtonia, but the other side of my brain had a different idea this morning. So I just went with the flow. As you know, we have housesitters taking care of hearth and home and cats as my husband and I are frolicking about the Oregon Coast this week on vacation.
He still gets annoyed but understands when I need to sit on a bench at the Heceta Lighthouse and send a … (9 comments)

realtor vacation: Where Will You Travel for a Winter Vacation? - 05/02/15 02:47 AM
It freaked me out a little yesterday to turn the calendar over to May. In some ways, I'm still recovering from my last winter vacation to Vanuatu, which ended in early January, and here it is May, and we haven't yet scheduled our winter vacation for this December. Well, I do have a 3-week Hawaii solo vacation for me handled, but the trip with my husband over Christmas and New Years has not been finalized, and let's just say it's not because of one of us.
Some people, I'm not saying who, need more time to make a decision. But I think … (13 comments)

realtor vacation: How Sacramento REALTORs Can Relate to Molokai's Wot Wot - 01/06/15 01:47 AM
The general manager of the Molokai Hotel assured me last night that the restaurant, which is presently under re-construction, will be ready in 8 weeks, or at least by Christmas, and he guarantees it. Emphatically. Which will most likely make a huge difference in the experience at this hotel; I can see lunches around the pool and evening dinners at oceanside. At the moment, there really are no hotels on the island that offer an onsite restaurant service.
People generally stop by the bar for a drink on their way to dinner somewhere. Many of the other restaurants in the closest … (7 comments)

realtor vacation: Why This Agent's Winter Vacation is Not Tasmania - 11/03/14 12:56 AM
Earlier in the year I had considered booking a winter vacation this December to New Zealand. I had my sights set on Tasmania. But after much deliberation and investigation, it seems that Tasmania weather is not the best in December, and that's not a perfect place to go alone. Besides, I'd rather see Tasmania with my husband, and he can't go on vacation with me this year. He can't get a month off of work to go because he just started his new job. So, this means I am going on vacation by myself, which is just fine with me. I … (7 comments)

realtor vacation: The End of a Mount Shasta Vacation - 09/01/14 02:46 AM
Leaving any place after a vacation is always a little bit sad. I had to struggle with those feelings yesterday when we headed off down Interstate 5 and left Mt. Shasta behind. We discovered we couldn't quite leave the area without making at least one more stop.
Initially, we had hoped to delay our departure a little and obtain a late checkout at Mt. Shasta Resort, but the front desk couldn't give it to us. No authority, I guess. Instead, she switched our call to the housekeeping police, which my husband said barked at him. No, no extension. Not even an … (10 comments)

realtor vacation: Maui Does Not Practice Daylight-Saving Time - 07/08/14 03:08 AM
How I could go to Maui and be completely unaware that it is 3 hours behind us in Sacramento is a puzzler. But when you think about it, I generally only go to the islands in the winter. In the winter, Hawaii is not on daylight-saving time, so it's only a 2-hour difference. I imagine there are many others like me who did not realize that Hawaii does not observe daylight-saving.
I read a response to one of my blogs from my agent friend in Sacramento who said she likes to go to Maui because it's only a 2-hour difference so … (7 comments)

realtor vacation: Heading Back to Reality in Sacramento from Maui - 07/06/14 01:46 PM
While I am away in Maui, my husband did the most incredible thing for me. He texted me a photo of my desk at home while I was lounging on the beach with Barbara. You might say, hey, what were you doing with a cellphone on the beach, and I would say that what happens in Maui stays in Maui. Besides, maybe I want to shoot a photo of the cabana boys hauling the sailboats to shore. You never know.
The photo had me puzzled. There was something rectangular shaped on my desk that I did not recognize. Something else was … (2 comments)

realtor vacation: Plenty of Dining Options near Wailea Resorts - 07/06/14 04:20 AM
The Wailea resort area in Maui is a place where one could dine out every night for 3 weeks and always go to a new restaurant. Although, once you find a few restaurants that you like, it might make more sense to try other dishes than to continually seek out new restaurants. It's also an enjoyable way to end a fun-filled day from so many beach activities such as should I lie on my stomach, on my back or perhaps raise the back of the chair a little bit to read. So many choices, I tell ya.
You can read more … (5 comments)

realtor vacation: Charles Lindbergh's Grave is Part of the Road to Hana Tour from Wailea - 07/05/14 03:29 AM
The best tip I can give you if you're taking the Road to Hana tour while in Maui is don't sit in the last corner seat on the bus, but you probably already know that one. One of the big highlights for me on the trip was the visit to the grave of Charles Lindbergh. It was odd because we drove past the gates to homes owned by celebrities and had no desire really to photograph them or care about them, but the cow motiff at the entrance to Weird Al Yankovitc's house was pretty. I had my heart set on … (6 comments)

realtor vacation: A Road Tour to Hana from Wailea - 07/02/14 10:18 AM
I am not sure how much in the way of 4th of July fireworks and celebrations we will see today since we are in Maui. It's not like the natives from this island fought for independence from the British. Nobody has ever said that to see the real America you need to go to Hawaii. I don't see anything remotely similar to America in Hawaii, and I imagine the Hawaiians like it that way.
It makes sense to do more Hawaiian things in Hawaii. Which is why we decided to drag ourselves off the beach and actually go somewhere today, although … (6 comments)

realtor vacation: What It's Like to Turn 62 in Maui - 06/28/14 03:09 AM
My financial adviser tells me her father spends about half the year in Maui. When he's at home in Sacramento, she says, her dad is all grouchy and grumpy. But when she talks to him from his home in Maui, he's happy, carefree and go-lucky. That's because everything is better in Maui, or at least that's what my sister says, and I believe it.
Maui is where my team member Barbara and I are spending the next 10 days. Oh, yeah, we've got our laptops, iPads and cellphones, but we've also got our cameras and a joyful attitude. You just can't … (14 comments)
