things to do on big island: Fun Visit to the Steam Vents in Hawaii - 12/29/18 09:32 AM
People of all ages can visit the steam vents at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. It's got the typical raised deck walkways with railings to protect you from falling into the steam vents. There is a lot to see along the way, too. From the tall grasses with shallow root systems to the wildflowers, to the illustrated billboards of people falling into the steam vents.
The day I was there was the first day of the Trump government shutdown. And the park was packed. Although partially closed, Volcano House was open and a few attractions. It was free, too, because there were no … (10 comments)

things to do on big island: What Kilauea Looks Like at the End of 2018 - 12/28/18 08:09 AM
Hard to believe that prior to 2018, the last big eruption from the volcano Kilauea on the Big Island happened 35 years ago. At that point in my life I was completely engrossed in selling real estate in Newport Beach (southern California). I do not recall listening to music or even watching television in the early 1980s, but I do remember that event. Back then every volcanco I compared to Pompeii. Picturing a city frozen in time, people covered in lava as they prepared dinner.
When my husband and I first viewed Kilauea it was by helicopter. I was amazed at how … (8 comments)

things to do on big island: Where the Lava Created New Land in Hawaii - 12/26/18 11:19 AM

There are plenty more photographs and close-up shots of the lava in my personal blog today of the new land formed in Hawaii. Even though the eruptions were in the spring, there are spots where the lava is still hot to the touch. Most people see this from either the air or by sea, but you can get there by land, too.
I know this might not interest many of you, but for those of you who love rocks like I do, you will appreciate this. In my blog I talk about what happens if you remove a lava rock from Pele's … (8 comments)

things to do on big island: Locals Do Not Go to MacKenzie State Park After Sundown - 12/24/18 11:05 AM
A while back on Active Rain there was a MeMe of sorts going around in which one of the questions was do you believe in ghosts. That seemed like such an odd question to ask. Interesting, but odd. Like, we all know how Fox Mulder would probably answer that question.
But some people are also very suspicious.
There have been murders and disappearances along with actual "ghost" sightings  and mysterious sounds at MacKenzie State Park in Hawaii; it's not even open at night. But some people will go there.
You are very unlikely to find a local Hawaiian visiting MacKenzie State Park … (4 comments)

things to do on big island: The Floral Adventures of Akaka Falls on Big Island - 09/05/18 09:45 AM
After our exhilerating ziplining adventure on Labor Day, we decided to visit Akaka Falls. I suppose it's possible that trip could have been the plan all along but I only first heard of it after the 8 ziplines. Vika said she and Josh missed the falls during their last trip here because it was closed. I rarely turn down an opportunity to visit a state park, even those I've seen before because you always see something new.
Akaka Falls is one of those must-see tourist attractions on Big Island. It features an optional loop trip to see two big waterfalls and a … (3 comments)

things to do on big island: Always a Good Time to Go Snorkeling in Hawaii - 09/03/18 09:51 AM
For the first time in a long time, I left the house yesterday without my cellphone, keys or bag. Our houseguests, Josh and Vika, suggested a snorkeling trip south of Kona. Since they were driving, I figured I didn't need anything. To leave the house without important items to keep an eye on is a bit strange for me. Exhilerating, though.
During our snorkeling adventure, I once again happened upon a remarkable event. A giant manta ray! With a back that looked like if I petted it, the skin would feel like velvet. I swam with that ray for a long distance, … (6 comments)

things to do on big island: There Are Days You Say I Am Going to the Beach - 12/14/17 11:01 AM
Stumbling upon honus (turtles) was not my goal yesterday, but that's exactly what happened. Except for the extremely windy weather and severely pounding surf up the coast, it was a beautiful day to go to the beach. Kathy Streib gave me the idea to go. I thought why am I sitting in front of my computer at the house when I can sit in front of my cellphone on the beach? The weather in Kailua-Kona was calm. Thirty minutes away, all hell was breaking loose.
There are beaches much closer to my house in Kona than the beach I visited yesterday, but still … (8 comments)

things to do on big island: Snorkeling Adventure With James Arness in Hawaii - 12/18/15 12:16 PM
If you've got to make it your last day in Hawaii, I figure one may as well make one more snorkeling adventure, and who better to share it with than the spirit of James Arness? To walk on the boat that he had custom built. To sit where he sat. To touch the rails his hands once graced. But can you picture James Arness snorkeling?
The problem with snorkeling is it grabs you and won't let you go. On Christmas Day we leave for Cuba, and there is even more snorkeling in Cuba. One of the rules is you have to meet … (7 comments)
