Peninsula Living: Answer: The Pulgas Water Temple
Peninsula Living: The Pulgas Water Temple
Located in the hills behind Woodside and Redwood City, CA, you'll find the stately Pulgas Water Temple. It was built by the San Francisco Water Department in 1938 to commemorate the completion of the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct, which brings water from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, across the state of California, to Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir, near which the Temple stands.
Many of our mid-Peninsula cities, including San Carlos, get all or part of their water supply from the Hetch Hetchy system, so the inscription near the top of the monument is especially appreciated, "I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people" [from Isaiah 43:20]
