Winter Bliss in Summerland
Winter in Santa Barbara, well actually, Summerland, just a couple miles South of Santa Barbara and the Southern neighbor of Montecito, is a beautiful time of year.  Today is January 27th and sitting on my deck in the seaside beach town of Summerland, CA, I'm having another one of those "it doesn't get better than this moments.  Nary a breeze all the way across the channel to Santa Cruz Island, which looks close enough to swim to this evening.  Don't try it though, unless you can swim 19 miles.  I'm sitting here admiring Santa Cruz Island and it's highest peak at 2,470 feet above the Pacific Ocean, the highest in the Channel Islands.  The channel between Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz Island is one of the richest , most diverse underwater ecosystems in the world.  There is a cold Northern current that travels from Alaska all the way down the West Coast and a warmer Southern current that comes up the coast from Mexico, that converge in these waters.  The result is a mixture of tropical and arctic species that is found nowhere else.  This southern facing coast is sheltered from the Northwest Winter storms and protected from the Southern swells ... more
