Here in the northwest gutters are an important part of the home. We have heavy rains and the gutters capture the runoff water and then distribute it to the ground below through a system of downspouts.
When organic debris from trees collects on the roof, and then runs down the valleys and to gutters below, you can end up with water overflowing the gutters and an assortment of other problems.
