Unemployment rates are high but jobs are coming to area
North Carolina's unemployment rate hit a record 11.1 percent in January, the highest since states revised the way they calculate unemployment in 1976. Businesses are moving into the Charlotte area and creating more job opportunities.
According to a report in The Charlotte Observer and News 9, Siemens Energy plans to expand its manufacturing plant for turbines and generators and to move part of its Canadian operations to Charlotte. The move could bring as many as 800 jobs. The North Carolina Commerce Department is expected to approve the deal Thursday morning. Siemens is headquartered in Germany.
Uptown charlotte will be home to another bank's headquarters. Officials with Fifth Third announced Wednesday that the bank would move its North Carolina headquarters from the northern part of the city to uptown. CEO Bob James says along with the headquarters, 250 workers will relocate from the company's current location. The building will be renamed the Fifth Third Center. Over the next three years, the company plans to add between 30 and 35 new banking centers throughout the Charlotte and Raleigh areas. It plans to create up to 300 new jobs to staff the buildings.
