Library of Philadelphia hosting carbon sequestration discussion, June 14th
This is information from the Sierra Club of Southeastern PA and the Energy Coordinating Agency. I hope you find it useful.
Free Library of Philadelphia to host discussion of geologic carbon sequestration
There will be a presentation about geologic carbon sequestration at 6:45 p.m. Monday, June 14, at The Free Library of Philadelphia, 19th and Vine streets, 4th Floor.
Dr. Michael Celia, chairman of civil and environmental engineering at Princeton University, will discuss a range of options to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reduce global warming. He'll focus on carbon storage in rock formations deep underground. This process, though viable, has possible environmental consequences, and these need to be weighed against alternative approaches. Important questions include: Will the carbon stay underground forever? How much energy is needed to get it there? How massive must the process be to be effective?
Liz Robinson, founder and director of the Energy Coordinating Agency, will talk about a bill in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives that would require the state to develop geologic carbon sequestration technology. Environmentalists say this will prolong the use of coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel.
