Calvert County Jousting Tournament
Calvert County Jousting Tournament. The 144th Calvert County Jousting Tournament will be held on August 28 at Christ Church located at 3100 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, MD Route 264. Spectators watch modern day knights attempt to spear three suspended rings while riding a horse at a full gallop. The tournament is organized by skill levels which include novice, amateur, semi-pro, and pro with judges from the Maryland Jousting Tournament Association.
The sport of jousting was made Maryland's official sport in 1962. Jousting tournaments were originally military excercises among nobility during the 10th to 12th centuries in Europe- violent contests where the participants speared one another, not exactly a "sport" in the context of sports today. Over time, chivalry prevailed - knights were considered gentlemen. The deaths of nobility  brought about the end to man-to-man jousting and eventually evolved into ring jousting.
