Diet Dangers for Teens
If your teenager wants to join the low-carb diet craze, it might not be a good idea. If your teen is overweight, some kind of modification to his or her food intake may be appropriate, but "diets" aren't advisable for children or teens, especially one that is as restrictive as a low-carb diet.
While it's true that many teenagers consume lots of empty calories through foods like flour, sugar and corn syrup, they absolutely need some refined carbohydrates from such sources as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Carbs provide the energy that growing teens need.
Teens who go on extreme versions of low-carbohydrate diets can end up with problems from not getting enough fiber. Many other problems can occur, too. For instance, bone health can be compromised because of low intake of dairy products, your teen may find it difficult to concentrate due to the lack of glucose that the brain needs to stay sharp, and growth problems can result from a very restrictive diet.
Instead of allowing your teen to "diet," speak to your pediatrician about a healthy approach to weight management.
