Layers of Light
Rooms that feel warm and welcoming often have one thing in common ... thoughtfully-selected and well-placed lighting. This concept is known as light layering; and you can hire a lighting designer to do it for you, or with these tips, you can learn how to layer light yourself:
The first type of light that you need to have is ambient or general lighting. This refers to the overall light that a room receives, typically from a large, overhead source, like a chandelier. Second, you will need task lighting to provide light to an area for a specific purpose. An example of this would be a desk lamp or under-cabinet lighting. Finally, accent lighting (or mood lighting), like sconces or track lights, are often used to highlight a piece of artwork or architectural feature in a room.
