Costa Mesa Police To Have DUI Checkpoint- Nov. 20 & 22!
The Costa Mesa Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau will be conducting two DUI/Drivers License checkpoints leading up to Thanksgiving and Black Friday. The first checkpoint is scheduled for Saturday, November 20, 2010, from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at Harbor Boulevard/Victoria Street. The second checkpoint is scheduled for Monday, November 22, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Sunflower Avenue/Plaza Drive. This is part of an ongoing campaign to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes. DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as being a valuable means for heightening awareness of the dangers of impaired driving. Additionally, drivers will be checked to ensure that they have a valid driver's license. Since 2007, DUI collisions have claimed 6 lives and resulted in 220 injury collisions harming 313 of us in Costa Mesa. Statewide, overall traffic deaths declined by 23 percent, from 3995 in 2007 to 3081 in 2009. Total traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in six decades. DUI deaths declined by 16 percent, from 1132 in 2007 to 950 in 2009, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System. Remember, ... more
