Weather Extremes

 
It seems like we live in a time of weather extremes.
I have just come in from an afternoon of 10 degrees in Sandy, Utah - very chilly to say the least, moving from one building to another. Tonight we are promised 0 - 2 degrees with windchill taking it way lower (too cold to snow)
As I hover over a heater, my thoughts are with relatives and friends of my home state of Queensland, Australia (hometown, Mackay), now in summer.
Pictured is this morning's cyclone map showing an approaching cyclone with a circle of major devestation of 500 miles across (major wind rotation the size of Texas - Texas fits into Queensland about seven times), predicted to cross the coast in the early hours of tomorrow.
This cyclone will probably take 12 plus hours to pass a fixed point. Sugar and bananas will be the major industries hit (not forgetting tourism in the Great Barrier Reef). The area affected by this cyclone is still recovering from recent extensive flooding.
Houses in cyclones are subjected to major stresses. Memories of my youth through twelve cyclones, had me helping with opening and closing windows on different sides to save our ... more
