The Angel Trumpets Are Coming Back!
Brugmansia, commonly known as the Angel Trumpet is a member of the Nightshade family. Nightshades grow all over the world and include some very famous varieties such as Datura (Jimson Weed), Mandragora (Mandrake), Solanum (Potato & Tomato), Nicotiana (Tobacco) and Petunia (Petunia). Perhaps the most well known member, from Greek mythology is Belladonna. Most of these plants produce alkaloids that are quite toxic to humans.
Four years ago we became the proud owners of three brugmansias suaveolens or Angel Trumpets. These three are container plants which we place outside after any danger of frost and bring inside in the Fall. Two of the three are pink and one is white. I have seen one locally that is yellow, but I know of no other colors for this variety.
The one common characteristic of these flowers is they produce a sweet, intoxicating scent only after dark and the bell shaped flower swells to its fullest. The flower grows to almost 10" in length and has a bell approximately 7" in diameter.
