US Hwy 101 shut down, rerouted through the glorious Mt. Shasta area
It's tough to get to Carmel from Crescent City when the main traffic artery, US Hwy 101 down the west coast is shut down at Garberville to all traffic. A huge slide that covered the entire highway and buckled the roadway itself had been the result of some very wet weather in these parts this spring. So, rather than take the arduous 299 east from Eureka,  I decided to take US Hwy. 199 northeast to I-5, then go south. This added about another 1-1/2 hours to my already 8 hour drive, but, hey, it was Sunday, and the weather was terrific.
I started my drive about 7 A.M. and it was magical. Frost had covered everything overnight and by the time I was on the road, the rising sun made the landscape look like sparkling crystal. This lasted all the way past Ashland in Oregon, at which point you start up the mountain to the Siskiyou Summit which is close to 4500 ft. and where there is snow. Luckily there was none on the road so I did not need chains.
