The day after Memorial Day…
Memorial day for some is nothing more than a day off work, others like myself it is a day to remember those soldiers that have falling in the line of duty for my freedom. We are lucky here in Portland to have the Willamette National Cemetery, a cemetery dedicated to thousands of veterans from all wars. There are over 130,000 presently buried at Willamette National Cemetery.
Now, what is an awesome site is on Memorial Day weekend, every one of those graves is given a flag. That is a lot of work and what is also a lot of work is picking up every one of those flags, this is where my family comes in to the story.
I want my kids to understand how many people from our local community actually fought for them and their freedom and never take it for granite. So today, my daughters youth group and my son’s Cub Scout troop are meeting at the cemetery to help pick up those 130,000 flags.
To me, this is a reminder to us that our freedom isn’t free and it also gives my family and I a chance to say “Thank You” to every grave we pick ... more
