Who Owns the Mountains? Man or Beast?
Summertime in the Rockies brings lots of people out to enjoy camping in the mountains. 
There have been numerous reports lately about the ongoing battle between man and beast.
This past weekend, there was a news story about some teens who were camping in their tents only to be woken up by a bear ripping through the side of the tent.  One of the boys was scratched by the bear but they both made it to safety without further incident.
The park workers searched for the bear and reported that they "Put Down" a bear matching the description that the boys gave.  Male bear, approximately 200 pounds.
While I am sorry for the boys, my heart sank a little at the idea of "Putting Down" the bear.  First of all, how do they know this was the bear and why did they have to kill it?  Did he have distinguishing marks which made him stand out from the other bears?  Tatoos?  Glasses? Red Hoodie???
Last night I heard a news story of a man who was walking through an unpopulated, grassy area in the foothills with his two year old toddler.  He let the toddler run up ahead of him alone.  ... more
