Marie Antoinette's Hamlet
It can be pretty boring being a queen. In 1785, Marie Antoinette had a hamlet built for her amusement at Versailles, which included a farmhouse, a mill, a dairy, a barn and other buildings, all constructed around a pond. It was a working village, with peasants imported to inhabit it, and it is said that Marie Antoinette enjoyed milking the cows, and often spent time there.
The Hamlet is a lovely place, a real surprise amidst the opulence and formality of Versaille's palaces and gardens, but there's no question that it was a fantasy world - real hamlets and farms of the time were nowhere near this nice.
