Located in downtown, The Dalles, Oregon and listed in the National Registry Of Historic Places, St. Peters Catholic Church was initially built in 1897. The church is gothic in style and truly impressive when viewed in person, as it is 176 feet high, topped with a 7 foot weather vane. Through the history of The Dalles, the steeple was used as an identifying point or benchmark and river boat captains used the steeple as a navigational tool. The church has 34 stained glass windows, most donated in memory of pioneer families. Artistic touches throughout the church, from the serene Madonna sculpture to the historic pipe organ, are stunning and of the highest quality.
In 1971, the church was scheduled to be demolished until a small band of citizens raised money to purchase and restore the church to its former glory. Still inscribed on the church is this quote:
"Whatever you can do - or dream you can - begin it! Boldness has power, magic and genius in it...!"  -Goethe
