Amazing Tent Rock Kasha-Katuwe Near Albuquerque
One of the many area attractions found around Albuquerque and Rio Rancho New Mexico is a well kept secret known as Tent Rocks.  This is a National Monument but it’s off the beaten path so it’s not uncommon to enjoy some seclusion and serenity while visiting this magical place. (scroll down for photos)Tent Rocks or Kasha-Katuwe (white cliffs) in the native language was formed over 6-7 million years. Volcanic activity in the Jemez mountains spewed rocks, ash and a pyroclastic flow down through these valleys.  Over the millennium wind and water have slowly carved out these marvels of nature.  The Tent Rocks stand from just a few feet high to over 90’.  Some of these formations have a remaining cap or HooDoo that appears to be a teetering boulder.  The HooDoo protects the much softer tuff (hardened volcanic ash) from even more erosion.The trail through this fairly land of pointed formations is approximately 1.5 miles one way.  This is not a terribly difficult trail but does have some narrow passages and a healthy 630’ vertical ascent.  The climb to the top is well worth the effort, the views of the Sangre De Christo (Blood of Christ) mountains and the overlook of ... more
