Tuesday Stroll In Northern Virginia-Our Covered Bridges Don't Compare To Lancaster PA
Cal Yoder resides in beautiful Lancaster County PA photographs and writes terrific blogs about the covered bridges in his area.  His posts remind me how important it is to preserve our history even if it is something as modest as a covered bridge.  When I owned a home in the Shenandoah Valley of VA the Meem's Bottom Bridge was a few miles from my house.  Just like one of the bridges Cal wrote about Siegrist Mill Covered Bridge, the Meems Bottom Bridge also was destroyed by floods in 1870 and 1877.  It was rebuilt in 1878 and was still standing as built until 1976 when vandals set it on fire.  The bridge was rebuilt from original timbers and reinforced to handle modern traffic.Today on my Tuesday Stroll today, dodging rain drops, I headed to the closest thing we have to a covered bridge in Northern Virginia.  It is the pedestrian bridge at Tackett's Mill in Woodbridge VA.  Designed to replicate a covered bridge it is a nice spot to take a quick walk.  The pond has a  few small fish and turtles to check out.  You can also stroll around the path past the Tackett's Mill Townhouses and the Old Mill ... more
