What To Do After The Farmers Market Closes
This is the first Wednesday in many months that I am unable to walk out my office door and over two blocks to the weekly farmers market.
On a whim, I decided to brainstorm on how people can survive a winter without the farmers market:
1) Visit small, specialty grocery stores to find produce different than the commercialized ones found in big box stores.  In Bend, we have a local favorite--Newport Avenue Market.
2) Experiement cooking with specialty grains.  The season of abundunt fresh produce is winding down, so instead of figuring out how to cook up another zucchini, try adding a healty grain to your diet and learning how to cook with it.  I recommend trying Quinoa and Teff.
3) Visit indoor produce stands.  Although some of these are still seasonal, they may last a bit longer than the farmers market because they have an indoor location.
4) Grow herbs indoors.  There's nothing beter in winter than a heavily spiced stew, so try starting your own herbs indoors in pots.  They can be transplanted outdoors in the spring.
5) Also, try growing your own greens indoors.  The National Gardening Association recommends Arugala, Chives, and Mixed Lettuce for indoor spaces.
