City of Santa Clarita Talks with Six Flags Regarding Magic Mountain
Santa Clarita's city manager talked recently with the head of Six Flags, working to entice Six Flags to allow the Magic Mountain theme park to be annexed into the City of Santa Clarita.
Promising lower taxes, more marketing and more police presence, the City of Santa Clarita hopes to keep Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor operating as local theme parks instead of being sold off to developers for the land value.
Six Flags has a huge amount of debt that it's trying to settle by selling off selected parks. Although Magic Mountain is apparently earning a profit, there's more cash flow to be had by selling off the land. However, the City of Santa Clarita is hoping to show that the long-term benefit of keeping Magic Mountain operating as a theme park will outweigh the immediate gratification of selling it off for land value.
Those of us in the Santa Clarita area are holding our breaths as this whole scenario plays out. Not only is Magic Mountain one of the largest employers, it also brings a lot of tourist revenue into the area. And of course nobody wants to see Magic Mountain go Condo!
