Broward County was established in 1915. The name "Broward County" comes from the Florida governor from 1905 to 1909, Napoleon Bonaparte Broward. He was given the honor of having the new county named after him when the new county was created by a Florida representative named Ion Farris. The land to create Broward County was given by Miami-Dade County and Palm Beach County, in very nearly equal pieces. The land area that makes up Broward County is made up of more than 1,300 square miles. In the early years of Broward County, the area was a major agricultural center of South Florida.
Following World War II, South Florida would never be the same. During the war, South Florida was home to many important military operations, and at any given time was home to thousands of soldiers.
