To be Honest with you...
To be Honest with you...
Why do we preface our statements with "To be Honest with you"? What does this really mean when someone states that? Is this because, we normally aren't honest when we speak?
What about, "To tell you the Truth"? Again, does this mean that when we speak we normally don't tell the truth?
These are phrases that are so commonly used, and when I think the phrase might be fitting I still bite my tongue as I just refuse to let that come out of my mouth as I don't want people to think that I don't normally tell the truth or I"m normally not honest.
I was raised to be honest and to tell the truth so, to me, these phrases are just a given, just understood. And I'm not talking about the little white lie as their okay, right? Smile.
Perhaps we use these phrases as we desire to put an emphasis on the fact that we're honest or we're telling the truth because what we're about to say is really important. Maybe.
