Backyard kitchen gardening in Catonsville!
This is my first year growing a kitchen garden in my backyard and so far so good! My husband built 2 raised beds for my birthday in the spring which is great because it allows us to control the soil.  Basically we poured in 10 bags of good Miracle Grow garden soil mixed in with some compost.  I would probably grow in that garden if you planted me! We live in Catonsville near Baltimore and is in the USDA Zone 7 so we have a hot, humid growing season! I started by planting seeds back in May for snap peas, zucchini and cantaloupe in one bed.  The beans did great and my son eats them right off the vine - a winner!  The zucchini and cantaloupe plants actually came up really well and were about a foot off the ground when my dog ate all 6 of them! Grrr!!! So I had to start over with actual plants since I figured I didn't have time to start over with seed.  I also put a folding wire fence around both beds to keep that crazy dog away from my vegetables!
