Deed Scam - How Low Will People Go
A few comments on my post yesterday, "Congratulations on your new home! My work here is done - NOT" inspired this post.
In my entry, I mentioned a Deed Scam and some of you commented that you'd never heard of it so I thought I'd dedicate today's post to it. This will be short and sweet because there really isn't much detail to it.
Here's what happens:
Your new homeowners get a letter in the mail, telling them that XYZ Company can help them get a copy of their deed for a hefty fee. Sometimes it's $75, sometimes it's $100 or more. The fee covers it all from retrieval to mailing.
Scam? Yep. Illegal? No from what I've read and watched.
Your homeowners can get a copy themselves by going to the agency in their city/county that records the deeds. The cost will be somewhere between .50/page to maybe 1.00 or 1.50/ page. You can learn more about it via Google - there are plenty of stories out there!
By letting your clients know that you are available for any questions after the deal is closed, you can hopefully help them avoid any scams. Perhaps this is something you can include in ... more
