Alameda Safety & Accessibility Program for seniorsThe Alameda Fire Department sponsors a free program to assist low income seniors and the disabled with fire safety and accessibility home improvements.
Alameda Fire Department and community partners include the Housing Authority of the City of Alameda, Alameda Hospital, Mastick Senior Center, Alameda Kiwanis and the Alameda Boy Scouts.
Low income Alameda residents who are 62 years of age or older and residents with disabilities are eligible for the free program.  The property must be the primary residence.
Low income limits are: 1 person household with income of  $45,500 or less, 2 person household with income of $52,000 or less, 3 person household with income of $58,500 or less and 4 person household with income of $64,950 or less.
The program provides free installation of smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, nightlights and other fire and fall safety devices.  Free installation of bathroom grab-bars, or raised toilet fixtures.  Free household modifications may include construction of wheelchair ramps and widening of doorways, hearing modification for doorbells, telephone ringers and strobe smoke detectors.
