Berlin's Famous Museum Island ~ Spectacular
As we made our way around Berlin this past summer I was intrigued with Museum Island which is located between the Spree River and the Kupfergraben. There are five uniquely designed museums displayed for the general public to view the royal treasures of Germany. King Friedrich Wilhelm 111 commissioned the construction of the Royal Museum – now called the Altes Museum in 1830.

Almost 70% of the buildings were destroyed during World War 11 and after the war the collections were split up between East and West Berlin.

The five museums comprising Museum Island are as follows:
 
 Alte Nationalgalerie
 Bode Museum
 Altes Museum
 Neues Museum
 Pergamon Museum
 
 
 


The Master Plan for the full-scale renovation and modernization of the area, adopted and underway since 1999 aims to turn the site into a state-of-the-art cultural location by 2015 and I for one can tell you they have done an excellent job thus far!
