Home buyers do "judge a book by its cover"
Or in this case, a home by its exterior.  Whether we like it or not, first impressions count when selling a home.  The exterior of a house is the first thing people see and it usually sets the tone for what's inside.

If the first thing home buyers see is an overgrown lawn and weeds, dirty windows, old chipping paint, toys and trash everywhere, chances are, the house hunters won't even bother getting out of their car.

Before you do anything to your house - painting, decorating or improvements - get in your car and drive round the block and stop next to the curb adjacent to your house, where any prospective buyer would stop.
Examine your house from their viewpoint. Sit (or stand) there for two minutes - roughly what the average potential purchaser would spend, before deciding whether or not it is worthwhile getting out of the car and taking a further look.

If you aren't much of a gardner and have no idea where to start, one idea is to go to a local college and place an ad for a student landscaper.  They should have cheaper rates and enough fresh ideas to get you started on your curb appeal.

Once the outside ... more
