Veterans served; those at home served, as well: Salute to my parents
As the nation pauses for Veteran's Day, I remember my Dad, Demps E. England. He served in WWII, enduring months of bitterly cold weather on the tiny outpost of Attu Island, Alaska. Damage done to his feet, which froze along with his ears, later contributed to partial amputations of both feet. He also suffered hearing loss. Vineda Hall England, Mom, was a civilian servant, as she was one of the many women who worked in factories that made war supplies. Mom was (and is) small of stature, so she often welded inside the confined spaces of the turrets of tanks. She still smiles when she remembers "test driving" tanks. How many 4 ft 11 inch women do you know who can say that? After the war, Dad and Mom married and started their family in Flint, Michigan. The soldier and the Rosie Riveter, part of the Greatest Generation, were together until Dad's death. Thanks, Dad and Mom, for showing the world and your family how it's supposed to be done. Happy Veteran's Day to those who serve (and served) and those at home who wait (and waited).
