Auld Lang Syne
Auld Lang Syne
Since New Year's eve is just around the corner, I was just thinking about this song and started to wonder why we sing it in the first place. So I did some research and here's what I found from Wikipedia:
"Auld Lang Syne" is a Scots poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song. It is well known in many countries, especially in the English-speaking world; its traditional use being to celebrate the start of the New Year at the stroke of midnight.
The song's Scots title may be translated into English literally as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long long ago", "days gone by" or "old times". Consequently "For auld lang syne", as it appears in the first line of the chorus, might be loosely translated as "for (the sake of) old times".
I know it must be old information for most people but in the spirit of the season, let's just appreciate the beauty of the song and how it captures our hearts and rekindles the bond each time we sing it with our loved ones.
Happy New Year everyone!
