The California Association of Relators recently sent me this info graphic that got me thinking about how single-family homes in Santa Cruz, CA differ from homes in the rest of the Bay Area.

Santa Cruz’s natural beauty definitely influences the characteristics of a home. Neighborhoods that extend along the Santa Cruz Mountains tend to have porches and balconies because of the amazing views they have of valleys or the ocean. Most homeowners have lush gardens filled with plants and flowers. The eclectic culture of Santa Cruz emphasizes the need for a sustainable community; so many residents create gardens with edible plants and flowers instead of grass lawns. For neighborhoods that were designed with little space for gardens, people have taken the initiative to start their own community gardens. One of the most well know community gardens is the Beach Flats Community Garden, Poets Park Community Garden, and Lighthouse Neighborhood Park. Community gardens are a great way for neighbors to get to know each other while creating a space that everyone can contribute to, leading to delicious and healthy meals.
