I try to avoid starting stories with "Back in the day" or  "I remember when", because I remember when back in the day people who talked like that sounded like old farts to me. If you were around to watch the first moon landing as I was, albeit I was very young at the time, there is no escaping the use of these catch phrases now and again to make a point.
  That same year Neil Armstrong uttered those historic words from the moon (1969), my parents took delivery of a shiny new washer and dryer set. When the Eaton's delivery truck pulled in front of your home "in those days" half the street took note. I remember the neighbours coming over to see.   This was literally an event "back in the day".  Adults standing around, drinks in hand, looking in awe at a washer and dryer and my parents, arms folded, standing back proudly like we were the Rockefellers or something. Simpler times for sure.   Keeping things in perspective this was about a $400 state of the art high tech purchase at a time when the average household income was about $7000 a year .
