Amid all the color of the Rainbow Springs State Park near Ocala, FL, you will find the annual Cracker Weekend celebration. A fun filled event for people of all ages celebrating life in Florida from days ago.  See also Rainbow River State Park - a Treasure - Part 1

In other states, ‘Cracker' might have a negative connotation, but here in Florida, it actually has a more historical meaning. It refers to the sound of the crack of the whips used by early pioneers to flush the cows and horses left behind by the Spanish out of the scrub.
The Florida Cracker was the original pioneer, after the Spanish, and had a huge impact on the area.

This local event that spreads out across the park, allows visitors to take a step back in time to the late 1800's. Presented in part by the volunteer citizens' group Friends of Rainbow Springs State Park, the unique two-day exhibition draws a large crowd every year.

Volunteers and staff members dress in period clothing and demonstrate how people in the 1890s made butter, dipped candles, ground corn, sent telegraphs, built boats and wove baskets.
