How Frequently Should you Back Up Data, and How Long to Keep?
I was recently reviewing the computer backup system that I have in my office, and I started to get worried. All of my office's important data is contained on a network drive that everyone can access. This drive is then backed up, every night, to another drive. My thought process back then was that if a drive failed one day, I still had a copy of its data from the day before!
While this idea still holds true for drive failure problems, I realized I was unprepared for a 'human error' type problem. Let's say someone in my office accidentally deleted a key folder, and didn't notice until a week later. Because I only have backups for the past day, it would be missing forever!
To solve this problem, I have added another set of backups to my routine: weekly backups. Once a week, my network folder is now set up to back up to an external drive. Instead of replacing this backup every week, I am KEEPING all the weekly backups, at least for a month or so. This way, I can go back a few weeks to fix any human errors that may arise.
