DC is Still A Southern Town - Check Out Barbecue Battle this Weekend
I generally think of myself as a Washington native - after all I have lived here since before elementary school, but occasionally my Southern roots come out.  I am a second generation Army brat with grandparents from Birmingham AL and Lynchburg, VA.  I spent every summer in the mountains of North Carolina as a child and went to Duke for college. I love North Carolina barbecue and am bewildered by the Texas approach to the same meats! In my opinion, once you taste the perfection of North Carolina barbecue, is anything else necessary?
John Kennedy once said that Washington is a city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm. We have come a long way since then, but we still appreciate a good time and good barbecue! This first weekend of summer is the traditional National Capital Barbecue Battle - an annual competition between top BBQ restaurants from the Washington, DC area and around the country.  It takes place on Pennyslvania Avenue - between the White House and the Capitol - and close to the National Mall. What better way to appreciate our nation's capital and some wonderful scenery!
