on multitasking
A unique characteristic of our times is the idolatry of multitasking. 
Ten years ago, it would be incredible to see someone reading a newspaper while driving. But today, we see folks reading their mail,  texting and driving all the time.
Oh, I know YOU don't do it. But lots of people do! 
There is a false virtue attached to multitasking.
What about focus? What about the quiet virtue of patience?
Who would you rather talk to: someone who's checking their Facebook status and texting while they're having lunch, or someone who is truly present: calm, composed, focused, and talking only to you?
My hope is that, as time goes on, the novelty of technology will wear off.  There will be a new value placed on people who aren't multitaskers.
We'll appreciate the folks who can be present in the moment, attending only to the task at hand.
We'll find the value, once again, in paying attention to what we're doing, and doing only one thing at a time.
