CAPTAINS ABANDONING THEIR SHIPS - Jacqui's Random Scrawlings - Missive 1
It's amazing how these ship's captains manage to pull this off -
First we had Greek Captain Yiannis Avranas of the Oceanos which capsized off the east coast of South Africa in August 1991, he was criticized by passengers for leaving them behind with only the ship's onboard entertainers to help them evacuate. Avranas said he had to leave the ship first in order to  supervise the rescue from a helicopter! He said that the "ship was in darkness and the batteries and the crew's walkie-talkies had died". He was quoted as saying "When I order abandon the ship, it doesn't matter what time I leave. Abandon is for everybody. If some people like to stay, they can stay". Thanks to the massive efforts of the onboard entertainers and the South African Air force and Navy everyone (571 people) survived.  
Now we have the Captain of the South Korean ferry Sewol who has yet to let us know what his excuse is; it has been reported that he may have been one of the first to leave the ship. While his passengers, most of them children were told to stay put, he clearly disobeyed his own orders. As ... more
