When the stacks start tumbling down.
We have a great library system here in Coweta County Georgia. But for the first time today, I didn’t go to the library to check out a book.
I simply downloaded an E-book from the online library.
Now I know that this sort of behavior has been going on for years. But to me, it seemed somewhat sacrilegious. After all, the library has always been a more than just a building. It was a temple of knowledge.
But technology has made the Dewey Decimal System and stacks of paper books obsolete. After all, an entire library can be stored on a single server.
SO I couldn’t help but feel that I am contributing the demise of an institution that traces its roots back to ancient Babylon.
Perhaps I am just too sentimental. I’m sure that the convenience appeals to a lot of people. And the library never loses an E-Book.
But the time will come when the bricks and mortar buildings will be used for other purposes than warehousing old books.
And that’s kind of sad!
