Be careful with the disposal of fireplace ashes
It is that time of year again, chestnuts roasting by the open fire, jack frost nipping at your nose and all sorts of fun around the fireplace or wood stove.
Keep in mind that there is a reason why insurance companies do not like wood heat, there are a lot of people who do not know how to keep this special heat safe.
And one of the key ways beginners burn down their homes, fences, garages, etc is that they are not aware of the dangers of that hidden coal inside a bucket of ashes.
Treat these with respect, never put into a burnable or melt-able container, always put them outside, away from any combustible materials.
When possible spread them out around the trees in your yard where they can fertilize your trees while killing the coals with the snow in your yard.

As a precaution when spreading ashes around your yard trees, make sure you have snow on the ground or you will need to douse the ashes with a bucket of water to prevent  your yard from catching on fire.
