REAL "aging in place"- by Trail and Verse
 
REAL  aging in place... .
 


 
… along the ancient stream
 that runs blood-red,
(for the ground weeps
from the mountains, downward
 in winter’s deep,)
 
...along a way, hewn-hard
over hundreds of years
and carved
by man and beast,
and ten thousand travelers accompanied
by faerie-creatures never-seen,
 
...along that very way,
I tread a path profoundly pointed
and pounded into the clay,
as if in granite chiseled
so to record
the tales and tell
of those who are here now, and those who went before.
 
The spirit of the Cherokee is present in these woods,
alive with me in this same space.
We are sage companions,
aging in place,
just as Black Elk spoke:
 
“For what is one man that he should make much of his winters,
 even when they bend him like a heavy snow."…
