Southern California Ducklings Almost Here

 
Though it is still winter in many parts of the country, in Southern California the ducks are getting ready for new spring families of ducklings. Our lakes and ponds are cold but not frozen over. Ducks and Geese are making nests and soon their families will be floating in the lakes and ponds.

The Canada Geese are struting around and looking for a good place to make a nest near the water.
 

 
Here is a cute picture of momma duck taking her ducklings into the pond in Calimesa last summer.

Here is a duck nest in the Inland Empire and soon their will be many ducklings swimming in the pond. It is early for prenesting and nesting especially due to the extremely cold weather we have had. Many of the ducks that live here do not migrate south since the weather is typically mild. The factor that causes the ducks to migrate is if there is a lack of food. Ducks will eat fish eggs, small fish, snails, seeds, leafy greens, nuts and berries. The first two weeks of the ducklings life is the most critical. Mother duck must ... more
