The Rabbits of Summer
I was hoping to use Debbie Laity's Summertime Special contest to show off all the hard work Mary has done with our gardens this year, but the unending rains in May have delayed the blooms. There isn't yet much that's really photogenic, and I'm out of time.
 
And we can't venture inside the house, because our granddaughters have temporarily turned it into a combination toxic waste dump/charnel house. So that leaves me with the rabbits.
 
 
I love rabbits and I was thrilled when the first one showed up in our yard about 5 years ago. He brought along a few friends*, and now, I can't look out at the yard without seeing at least 3-4 of them happily munching away on my grass. The dogs gave up chasing them years ago, so they're very tame, except for the babies who haven't yet learned that we're harmless. And they're fun to watch - last week, a herd of 7 of them came barreling through our breezeway, happily frolicking their way down to the lake for a drink.
 
 
Some of my neighbors, however, don't share my pleasure, and have initiated a variety of strategies to rid themselves of these essentially harmless creatures. It's true that they eat ... more
