Herald Square is a small section of Midtown Manhattan formed by the intersection of Broadway, Avenue of the Americas, and 34th Street. Named for the iconic, but now-defunct New York Herald newspaper that was previously headquartered there, the square is made up of two distinct sections –Herald Square to the north, and Greeley Square to the south. Both areas are made up of a park surrounded by an array of retail stores.
Shopping is the name of the Herald Square game, with the best selection of chain clothing stores in the city, or possibly the world. The most famous of these is Macy’s flagship department store, the largest in the United States. The Manhattan Mall is also located here, as is the Fashion Institute of Technology. Transportation in the area is plentiful, due to the 34th Street- Herald Square subway station, as well as the PATH trains.
The parks serve as a popular spot for tourists taking a break from shopping, workers grabbing some sun during their lunch break, or residents looking for live in one of the most lively areas of Manhattan.
